The Macbook first freezes and after that the fans wil blow on max speed for a very short time followed by a black screen. The Macbook shows a popup at reboot with the error as stated above.

The device is a MacBook Pro 16" 2019 2,6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7.

What can I do to solve this error? I already ran a diagnostic mode (by pushing the 'D' while booting).

Sorry to hear about this. Knock wood, I have still been panic free so I've not been actively troubleshooting anymore although a friend recently sent me an article from August about Catalina 10.15.6 being prone to kernel panics from memory leaks. I've not read through it completely to see if it was applicable to what I was experiencing. Here's the link to the article:

I quickly skimmed through that article. I don't actively use VirtualBox, but I do have it installed. However, the memory leak idea got me thinking. In 10.15.6 I would regularly see Spotlight (or rather it's associated processes) using a TON of memory in Activity Monitor. This was all the time and I hadn't added any new drives to the system for quite some time. And now in 10.15.7, that issue seems to have corrected itself - I still have the same drives connected regularly and the mds_stores process is only using a few hundred MBs at the moment.

I did make it panic again last week, but it was different - it wasn't the CATERR like usual. And I was working it hard - Microsoft RDP, Exporting in Lightroom, tons of Firefox tabs open, blah blah blah. So I'm not even counting that one. It's been 5 days since then, and 9 days since the last CATERR one. So, as naive as this sounds, I'm crossing fingers that this becomes one of those software things that just works itself out. Maybe when Big Sur finally comes out...

I'm joining the list. I too, am having the same issue. Bought my Macbook back in June 2020. Problem started intermittently, now it's progressed into a daily instance. I'm in the middle of web meetings and all of a sudden my Macbook decides to panic and shutdown. It's frustrating, I spend over 3K for my MacBook to crash constantly. This is starting to be a bad decision, moving away from a windows device to a Macbook

Hang in there, MLNKC. It's unfortunate this is your first experience as a switcher. Stuff like this happens and we just have to deal with it. As a long-time Mac user AND Windows user as well, this is nothing compared to the stuff I used to deal with on Windows.

FYI, I'm working on a Public Beta of Big Sur and I've not experienced any kernel panics at all. I've got fingers crossed that this issue is solved soon.

Coming back on this topic as the issue started happening again to me.

So I've had Big Sur installed for the past 3-4 weeks and the panic attacks/random restarts stopped happening when the Mac would go to sleep - zero occurrences so far.

Instead, if I close the lid on my Mac, then it instantly restarts and shows the panic attack error message after booting.

Didn't figure out how to fix this yet, keep you posted if anything changes.

I have this issue too with my MacBook Pro 16' 2019 that I bought end of March 2020. Happens to me when I plug/unplug my Thunderbolt dock. I can be just browsing with Safari or during a Zoom call and then my cursor will freeze, keyboard won't respond, and in a few seconds it restarts on its own. Very frustrating!

Has anyone solved this problem?

I'm gonna knock on my wooden desk hard before I type the rest of this...

Since installing Big Sur I have not had a single panic on my Mini. It was on and running from November 14th until December 12th when I shut it down to change out my UPS. That's the longest it's stayed up in MONTHS. I don't know if it's the actual Big Sur update that did it, or if something else got updated in the same timeframe. But regardless, I've started to love my Mac again.

Of course, now that I said this it'll panic tonight, I'm sure! lol

I hope everyone else gets their issue(s) sorted quickly!

Actually, in the morning I plugged the connectors to power & thunderbolt display in (I use thunderbolt adapter to connect to the old 27" Thunderbolt display), opened the lid and the laptop didn't start. I pressed the power button and it restarted. The crashes started to happen in the last two days. They never happened before that.

I will keep an eye on it from now on. One thing that I am not sure about is whether the crash happens when the laptop tries to wake up or when it goes to sleep. I checked the system log and it looks like it crashes when it wakes up.

I'm not adding anything by way of a solution here, rather just adding my frustration. I'm getting constant Black Screen of Death crashes and, when the machine actually recognizes that there's been an issue, it shows the CATERR.

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)

2,3 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9

32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4

Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB

BigSur 11.2.2.

I've been through the same painful processes as most other users - reboot, remove software, reinstall. Nothing makes a difference. I'm convinced it's hardware but could Apple's manufacturing processes be so screwed that they would produce this many faulty units? Hard to believe.

Hi, I have the same problem on the same computer model MBP16" with the similar configuration. More than one year I have no any problems. now computer crashes appears while computer is doing something like copying big amount of files or during the gameplay. Also I start seeing computer crashes while its slipping. I suspect that all problems have been started after one of MacOS updates. I can't update to a BigSur for now continue suffering from this problem

Thank you^ this is very interesting article& Powerades nap was switched off on my MBP a long time before but this wasn't help me. Now switched off "Automatic Graphics Switching". I hope this will help. I was suspecting that the reason of such crashes was an external Apple Thunderbolt monitor with attached LaCe TB HDD
