Transferring existing Octopus card fails (Hong Kong)

When Octopus card support in Apple Pay was announced I immediately tried to transfer my existing card to my iPhone, but it always fails during the transfer (phone placed on card), with the progress bar around 80%. Both my phone and Octopus card work fine, any idea what could be the cause?

I already solved it - the issue turned out to be that my Octopus card was too old (issued before 2009).
