iOS 13.5.1 battery drain

The battery drain from background activity in iOS 13.5.1 is horrible. Happens on several apps, currently Bloom berg and Teamsnap. Same problem on my iPad and my wife's iPhone Xs. Come on Apple, this needs to be fix now!

in that case it is apps that have not been modified to run on the new OS and have runaway background usage, Viber fir example.

or a busted phone.

Nothing in 13.5.1 itself is causing this.

So to test this ( yes effort required)

  • backup
  • restore to factory settings as though you were selling it - see https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201351
  • Set it up with your apple account
  • Check battery usage in that vanilla environment.
  • Restore from backup.

Before I had any Apple product, my computer was Windows and my tablet and smartphone were Android, I used this Buienalarm. (We had a flood in our cellar in 2011, at that time I installed that Buienalarm)

This is one of the only apps I still use today I've always used as long as I own Apple products. It even was one of the first apps since I started using smartphones at all.

So about my battery: it was fully charged after DFU reinstall. With charger disconnected, I set-up iCloud, Touch-id and Wifi settings. I immediately went to app store do download that Buienalarm. Opened it, set-up, had the shower map visible and closed it down by pressing the home button. Still 100%. At that time I did something else, came back and the battery was 94%.

Checked the battery stats and it showed me a huge background drain just of that app. Nothing else was installed.

Then, I reported this issue here. While typing my previous post, I've got another idea...

To be certain if iCloud doesn't do anything wrong (due remaining settings or something), I created a brand new iCloud emailadress, with a brand new iCloud. I installed all that on that iPad. After that one app: Buienalarm. Again, after one hour in the battery stats: 25 + 32 min background activity. 4% battery drain during this time.

I am trying to make the Rain Alarm (Buitenalarm) use background refresh.

So far it refuses to do so and only small % of on screen in 24 hours. It has no background refresh toggle.

Auto dark is on and background battery usage in light or dark still zero.

Siri is on and listening. OneDrive is on ad is iCloud sync to keychain.

I will give it overnight but unless the English version is different to the Dutch one it just will not misbehave

@roomitarik: I did exactly the same with my iPad last Sunday. It didn't solve the problem here.

@peter_watt: First of all: many thanks to try this.

second: I think the Buienradar app here in Belgium and the Netherlands is a different one as you tried (looking to the icon).

I can't use a charger before this evening, so I can't open the app to show it (battery empty before I come home). But I'll run the app asap and send a screenshot here. Then you're able to verify the app's icon.

Everyone can see for themselves. 9 hours later, my battery has only dropped from 80 to 50 because as you can see I was busy downloading Apps from my AppStore and setting them up and rearranging them how I always do. Bear in mind, I have 114 Apps on my iPhone. So downloading and rearranging them took time. Which is why the only thing that took up my battery was App Store and Home & Lock Screen. As you can see there is not a single app running in the background. In fact, I woke up around 3 PM to check my battery status and it was still 80% with everything on. My Mail is now working fine. The only thing I disabled was Siri.

Redownloading Apps isn’t difficult at all, all one has to do is to log into their App Store, go to Purchase History and start downloading Apps. Simple.

Hi, this update 13.5.1 is very horrible. Firstly the battery drain too fast even I turned off app running background. And yesterday, I noticed that the light ambient sensor location at the notch of my iphone XS Max is very very hot. Checking the setting, I found that True tone and Auto-brightness disappeared. Before, with 13.4, everything was running fine.

What happen here ? Does this firmware kill the hardware. I tried many tips ( reset the setting, DFU restore, but the situation is not better). Now I have to return to the old iphone 6 Plus.

Apple do something! iPad Pro 10,5 and iPhone 6s are just garbage after the 13.5.1 update. Baterries drain in a few hours even if devices are not used.

I can’t downgrade, I can’t return them under the warranty so what I suppose to do? Who’s gonna pay for battery replacement after all those extra charge cycles?

Please don’t tell me about dimming the screen, mail fetch/push, background refresh. I got both devices restored to factory settings without restoring my data. Only 4 basic apps installed!

I must admit, I am equally as concerned over this hit on extra, *unnecessary* charging cycles which seem to bring the all important battery health stats down and ever closer to needing a replacement battery or phone... Or is that the goal here? Bring the device closer to the point where the software throttles the phone because the health has dropped so much. Hmmm. [takes tin foil hat off]

Same here. iPhone SE 2016, it went from 90% charged to 1%, then shut down within 20 minutes of NON use. The phone is also running incredibly slow, lagging on something as basic as a phone call for 8-9 seconds of a frozen screen. Very strange. It has made the phone almost unusable. I realize over time older phones will slow down with newer updates, but this is quite a difference from one or two iterations ago.
