Apple pay verification

I am trying to set up Apple pay. When i get to the section for verification phone number it is set to an old phone number i no longer use. I have checked and updated my icloud account details which only contains my current, correct number. There is no option to choose an alternative verification method nor update the number. Any help appreciated.
