connecting iMac 2012 and Mac mini

Is it possible to connect my 2012 27" iMac (which is super slow for my current needs now) to a Mac mini to use it as a screen? Would I need to buy any additional cords to connect it?

Here are my iMac specs:

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012)

Processor 2.9 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5

Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M 512 MB

Thank you team!

What OS version is the iMac running? For Target Display Mode to work, the iMac must have no higher macOS version that 10.13.X.

However, I agree with the idea of simply getting a external monitor for the Mini if you go that way (sorry, I also thought your already had a Mini). The money you would spend on the required cables and adaptors needed for the iMac solution would go a long way toward the purchase of a nice modern display.

Telling me I have to be more specific? I never said I had one, and honestly you know more than me, so you may as well dumb it down a bit so I understand...

So, sorry this is still unhelpful and does not answer my question - I was hoping for advice. I still really have no clue about this whole thunderbolt thing.

I don't want to buy another monitor, as I have a perfectly good iMac screen - why not use it. Unfortunately the old drive does not have the power I need, which is why I want to know if I can connect it to a Mac Mini.

Depending on the Mini you get, but a new one with USB-C/TB3 ports would need this & a Thinderbolt cable to use the iMac as a Monitor...

Overview

The Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter lets you connect Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 devices — such as external hard drives and Thunderbolt docks — to any of the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports on your MacBook Pro.

As a bidirectional adapter, it can also connect new Thunderbolt 3 devices to a Mac with a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 port and macOS Sierra or later.

In addition, it can be used to connect Thunderbolt-enabled displays — such as the Apple Thunderbolt Display and LG Thunderbolt 2 displays — to any of the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports on your MacBook Pro. However, using this adapter with an Apple Thunderbolt Display requires a power source, because the display does not provide power through the adapter.

Note: This adapter does not support DisplayPort displays like the Apple LED Cinema Display or third-party DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort displays. For more information, visit the Apple Support page for the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter.
