Apple TV 4K, Sonos Arc and Dolby Atmos

I have the new Sonos Arc Soundbar with Dolby Atmos support and a Apple 4K tv. An Apple article says to connect the ATV 4K directly to a Soundbar via the HDMI Cable. Each device has 1 HDMI port so if you do that there is no way to get the signal back to the TV? Currently my ATV is on HDMI Port 3 and the Sonos Arc Soundbar is in HDMI Port 4 the ARC Channel. Also in the ATV settings under audio format I don’t get the option to select immersive audio which is where the Atmos setting should be listed. And the TV is a 3 year old Samsung so there should be no issues here with the TV. Ideas?

Thanks.

Hi!

I did some digging around.

In the article "Play audio in Dolby Atmos or surround sound on your Apple TV" there is this smal text:

"*Some sound bars and AV receivers support Dolby Atmos, but don’t support video formats like HDR10 and Dolby Vision. In this case, you can plug your Apple TV 4K into either the sound bar or AV receiver to play sound in Dolby Atmos. Or you can plug your Apple TV 4K into your television to watch video in HDR and Dolby Vision. To do both, you need a television or an AV receiver or sound bar that supports both Dolby Atmos and high-quality video formats. Apple TV 4K uses a high bandwidth form of Dolby Atmos that doesn’t work over ARC connections."

So basically you need to plug in your Apple TV 4K in to your soundbar / AV receiver or use a connection that supports a higher bandwidth.

Now comes the bad part.

Because the Sonos Arc only have one HDMI port and, as you said, the only connection you can have is from Apple TV 4K to the TV and then from the TV to the Sonos Arc means your TV need to have eARC to be able to support the higher bandwidth and send it though to the Sonos Arc.

I understand that this isn't something you like to hear and I feel the same as I'm in the same situation with my Philips TV but I guess we can always leave a feedback for Apple.

The TLDR-version:

To use the Sonos Arc with your Apple TV 4K your TV need to have a eARC connection support.

batsabode -

You reference an update to the Sonos software. Is that confirmed?

And just to confirm - currently, regardless of which new LG model you go with, are you unable to pass through atmos from an apple 4k (I'm looking to purchase the LG GX OLED)? It all needs to be through the LG apple tv app?

Also - how does that app compare to the actual apple 4ktv console?

I have sony 40 inches full hd 1080p tv. With hdmi ARC. And the Sony soundbar with dolby atmos. Will I get atmos if I connect apple tv 4k with directly into soundbar's hdmi in with an hdmi 2.1 complaint cable ( 48 gbps belkin ultra hdmi cable recommended with apple tv 4k) and then *hdmi out* of sound bar to the tv with another hdmi cable . Its not a 4k tv. So if this is the mode of connection, do I still get atmos sound? Obviously can't get 4k resolution.

pghatak,

I'm on a similar thread on the Sonos Community page. One of the contributors is getting Dolby Atmos through his Sonos ARC, streaming content from an Apple TV 4K with a LG E9 TV. He has screenshots and very thorough explanations for everything.

I can't comment personally that it works - but this contributor seems highly credible. I'm getting a new LG GX later this week, so I've been scouring the internet to understand if I would be able to get atmos with the above setup, and his post convinced me it was possible. I can comment if my setup works once I install the TV in a few days.

I think the reason is that anyone who has the oled with EARC it will work I have the nano 90 with EARC and it doesn’t guessing its to do with the pass through and software as I have heard others with oled tv and it works. So not only is mine not working because Sonos doesn’t accept LPCM and apple send out mas signal but also the software and maybe hardware on the oled TVs are different to the nano even if both have EARC

Hi,

I was following this conversation a while ago as I was planning to get a Sonos Arc + Apple TV 4K + Projector setup but could not figure out a good solution to actually transmit Dolby Atmos signal to the Sonos Arc.

Then today I found out about this device from HDFury, it seems to meet my (and maybe your) requirements: https://hdfury.com/product/4k-arcana-18gbps/

What it does: "WORLD’S FIRST eARC adapter that allows FULL AUDIO up to Dolby Atmos over TrueHD from ANY external HDMI source to ANY eARC sound system".

Available for pre-orders, a bit pricey, but sounds promising.

Both my sound bar (Samsung Q950T) and TV (LG GX Oled) have eARC port, where it is connected via HDMI 2.1 cable.

ATV 4K is connected to TV, Dolby Vision works on TV, but the sound bar is not getting Dolby Atmos. TV was configured to passthrough audio signal from TV to sound bar via HDMI.

eARC supposed to support high bandwidth, but in this case it is still not working. So is this an issue with ATV 4K??

Hi Everyone - I'm hoping the group can help out.

I've had issues with choppy sound intermittently (1 out every 5 uses or so) coming through my Apple TV4K. I thought it might be the HDMI cord/port, but I switched the port and cord and it was still occurring.

I have a new LG GX with an earc connection that I run to a Sonos Arc. Typically everything works great and I get Dolby Atmos, but every so often, the sound is choppy and breaks up. I usually need to either reset the AppleTV or unplug it.

Has anyone else had a similar issue? Any fixes?

Thanks,

Adam

I have the same problem but it only occurs after I watch some thing encoded in Dolby Atmos. Then, when I go back to something without Atmos the sound cuts in and out. My only resolution so far is similar to yours. Power everything off and back on. It’s definitely the Apple TV box causing this because if I watch if The same thing using the Apple TV app on my LG CX instead of the standalone box it doesn’t happen.

First and most importantly - thank you for the very quick response @Terry.

Good to know I'm not the only one having this issue. Hopefully, Apple sees this and makes some kind of software update/fix.

Regarding Apple TV on the LG, any reason you'd use that versus the set-top? Are there benefits or cons to either way? Truthfully, I've just continued to use the set-top out of habit, and haven't really utilized the TV app.

Thanks
