can a mac 27" thunderbolt display mag safe power connection power a 2019 mac book pro?

I recently purchased a new 2019 macbook pro w/16" monitor I have a 27" thunderbolt monitor that I would like to use the magsafe power connection to power the laptop through an adapter going to a USB C connection. Will the monitor mag safe cable be able to power up the laptop? I believe the max output for the monitor is 85 watts and the macbook pro (power adapter) provides 96 watts of power. I know that under powering could be harmful to the laptop. Does anyone currently use this set up or knows if this could work based on the published specs? Thanks.

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 10.15

Hello Jccoggio,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. From what I'm understanding is that you are attempting to use your MacBook Pro 16" with a 27" Thunderbolt Display, correct? I'm here to help you take a look in to that!

If you're using a Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter to connect the devices, this adapter would not receive power as mentioned here:

About the Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter

"Learn more

  • This adapter doesn't receive power over Thunderbolt, so you can't charge your Mac by connecting the adapter to an external Thunderbolt display or other device that delivers power over Thunderbolt.
  • Other adapters for Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C"

If you have an Apple Thunderbolt Display, what I recommend is powering the MacBook Pro and Thunderbolt Display independently from each other. Here is an article on using external monitors with the Mac:

Use external monitors with your Mac

Hopefully this helps!

Cheers!
