I have been using FCP for 13 years and FCP X for the last 3 (currently 10.4.8). I use synchronize clips all the time to link audio from zoom H4n to 4k footage (Sony A7iii) but all of a sudden last week it just stopped working correctly and can't sync anything. I thought it might be my OS so I just upgraded to 10.15.5, but it did not help. Any thoughts?

What happens when you sync? Usual question about matching sample rates.
Are you making sync clips or multicam clips? The sample rates should be the same. Convert the Zoom files to 48K.
In addition to what Tom said: it does not hurt to try deleting preferences.
typically the clips just stack up one on top of each other, layer upon layer at the beginning of the audio clip. Sometimes 10% of clips actually sync correctly (so 1 out of 10). I was not aware of matching sample rates but I found that my video clips are 48kHz and my audio tracks are 44.1kHz. Is there a work around for this?
Is the audio 44.1 as well? It might be ok depending on the lengths of the clip s.
You can’t use the sync clip function for what you’re doing. It’s designed to sync one video with one or more audio tracks. You might want to use the multicam clip function to sync the clips. If that doesn’t work for you, and it probably won’t if you’re doing a multiscreen project, unless you have s as really powerful computer to stack all the multicam clips. There might be a way using that function but I can’t test it set the moment. You might have to sync the clips manually in a project.
got it. Yes, it still works fine--mostly for one video clip with one audio clip, so I will just sync one at a time vs. trying to do many. It has worked countless times in the past syncing several video clips with one audio. Thanks for your help on this.

sync clips. What program do you use to convert audio files to 48k?
Compressor. You might be able to do it in the Finder, but I can check now.

Can you post a screenshot that shows what you’re doing? You seem to indicate that multiple items are being stacked. What are you trying to put into the sync clip?
so I am syncing 8-9 video clips with an the audio clip. this is a screenshot with the audio clip after it was converted to 48k
As a note, the final clip is synced correctly, but none of the others are, and the final clip was synced successfully when it was at 44.1k as well.
