Inconsistent Active Calorie counting when outdoor cycling

Last month I was just using my Apple Watch 4 to track my workouts including outdoor cycling. When I would take a ride of 20-25 miles over 1.5 hours, it would report 815 active calories with an average heart rate of 118 bpm. Now I'm using a Wahoo bike computer to track my rides which gets imported to the watch. I'm wearing the watch while riding but no longer document this as an outdoor cycling workout.


Now the activity app gives 0 active calories even though it imports the Wahoo ride (in this case 27 miles).


Even though the watch must be monitoring the heart rate, it does not seem to accurately count active calories. In fact, the watch does show I climbed 67 flights of stairs (which is likely my uphill riding).


Why can't the watch figure out what I'm doing since it's importing this work out data? Note, when I try to use both the watch and the cycle computer to track the outdoor cycle workout, the activity app then counts double miles in my summary page (one for the activity app and one for the bike computer).

I'm using the Wahoo Element Bolt computer. It only records distance, cadence and speed along with the bicycle route. If you have an integrated heart rate sensor, it will also record those values (but I don't have that sensor).


The thrust of my question is this: If I use the Apple Watch Outdoor Cycle workout, the watch will record my heart rate actively, give me a distance summary, active calories and more. The Wahoo app for the same ride will give distance, speed and heart rate. For a 2.5 hour bike ride, the Apple Cycling app will give me credit for about 1400 active calories (the entire day's active calories will be around 1700). However, if I don't use the cycling app and only the Wahoo app, with a 2.5+ hour ride I get credit for a total of 1200 active calories for the entire day which includes the ride. So why does the Apple watch workout app count lower active calories when I don't record a workout as an outdoor cycle ride?


It seems to undercount active calories on my bike rides by about 500.

Thank you. I did look through all the suggestions you've provided. My Wahoo App is sending the workout data to the phone/watch. It may be that the Wahoo App just does not calculate active calories for outdoor rides. For a two-hour ride today, it reports 0 active calories. The watch gave me credit for active calories (about 600) based on my movement and heart rate, but this calculation seems to be different if I activate the Outdoor Cycling app on the watch.


Is it possible to configure the Outdoor cycling app not to count cycling distance? This might be a good workaround for me.

Let's have you check to make sure your height and weight are set in the iPhone under:


Health app > Browse > Body Measurements

Watch app > Health > Health Profile


Then test this out once again.
