How to salvage data from MacBook pro hard drive?

Reinstalling operating system fails. Is it possible to salvage data prior to re-initializing Mac HD? Is it possible to connect to a functioning Mac and get data off the non functioning Mac? Thx.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

Is the drive mountable?

Did you try Disk Utility.app>First Aid

Did you try a different cable connection?

A different port?

Did you try pulling the drive and putting it into a different enclosure?

it could simply be the controller, controller connection or the enclosure itself.

Try the "consumer grade" DataRescue5 https://www.prosofteng.com/mac-data-recovery/

or

Other professional data recovery service such as

Ontrack Data a Professional Data Recovery Service: https://www.ontrack.com/

Drive Savers https://drivesaversdatarecovery.com/

vendors provide free estimates and both are recommended by Apple.

Always work from a copy, you do not want to risk further damage the original files or drive.

Reconsider your backup plan ?

3-2-1 Backup Strategy: three copies of your data, two different methods, and one offsite.

Use DiskUtility Restore feature https://support.apple.com/guide/disk-utility/restore-a-disk-dskutl14062/mac

note: >System Preferences>Security & Privacy >Privacy>Full Disk Access

unlock the padlock, press the + button and add Disk Utility

Thank you Leroy. This is internal hard drive. Disk utility First aid does not help. It just dismounts the drive. I was working with Apple support and did not manage to repair it. Mac can not install Catalina over Internet. Apple support said that the next step is to erase the disk which means losing data. Before doing that I am trying to see if there is some magic that can help me.

While in disk utility I can see all directories but file names are grayed out. I took Disk image of one file on usb and transferred to another mac but it could not read .DMG file. I am wondering if I can connect 2 MACs and transfer image of a complete internal disk. Question is whether it would help salvage data. If yes what connection cable is required.

Thank you again.
