What I was told by Apple was to reset all settings. That worked for me. But then when the phone connected to the watch on the same cellular plan I started getting no notifications on the phone again and they went to the watch.

The Apple tech explained exactly what the person who responded to me explained and then it all made sense.

This is my first smartwatch so I was clearly panicking but that panic was unwarranted once I had everything explained to me.

You can set up your alerts to mirror the phone or you can set them up to get notifications on your phone and not your watch. It'll take time getting used to but there is nothing wrong with the watch, phone or software. These two pieces of tech are great and I've never been happier about owning a watch. This thing is great.

Hoping for some more watch faces in the new watchOS 7. Would be nice to be able to choose digital time on more analog watch faces too. I hear there is more customizations coming so this thing is going to get better and better. :)

That is how it's designed to work.

iPhone locked/watch locked = notifications show on phone

iPhone locked/watch unlocked = notifications show on watch

iPhone unlocked/watch unlocked = notifications show on phone

That is how it has been since the Watch was released.

I am having this issue as well. I get my alerts on my watch series 5 but my iPhone 11 pro max screen remains dark and I watched my phone as the message came in. The screen doesn't light up when the message comes in but when I tap the screen I see the messages are there. It's weird. As it happens, I just updated a day or two ago to the new OS that added car key. I think that update broke the software and apple needs to fix it again. It was working before that update. Can someone verify this an apple issue? All my settings are on and the silent button on the side is not turned on, it's set to allow all sounds. All notifications are on too. Please tell me this is a small issue that Apple will fix in the next update?

This didn't happen on my last watch version or iphone. Only when I upgraded to 5 and the 11 promax. I work from home, as many of us are right now. I really need to hear my alerts on my phone. I am not always looking at it and they don't always come through on my watch. It is really hit or miss. Apple should have a third option for this to allow us the users and the people buying the products to decide how we want our alerts. Just my opinion.

Thank you, but I do feel like this a flaw with Apple. I will try making the switch, thank you again!

It has worked this way since Apple Watches were released. It's quite inline with Apple's original, stated goal for the Watch to be a way of controlling notifications. You can certainly let Apple know you'd like to see something different here:
