imovie - how to stop transition from displaying "deleted" scene?

I applied a cross dissolve transition between two clips. I would like a 4-5 second dissolve, but the edited-out scene from the first clip appears before displaying the beginning of the second clip. I have tried the following:

  • lowering the dissolve to 1 second
  • adding a freeze frame at the end of the first clip
  • adding blank clip between the first clip and the transition
  • adding a blank clip between the transition and the second clip

Any suggestions? I have searched here and on the web, but can't find any solutions that would make this transition work right.

Thank you!

Hi, michael1040,

Transitions overlap the residual media that remains invisible in the clip after trimming, but is still there. That's probably why you are seeing a fade out of previously trimmed material. Due to non-destructive editing, footage that is removed still remains, it is just invisible in the normal timeline except where a transition utilizes it. So you need to remove this residual media.

The way to remove the residual media is to put a clip into a newly created project, trim it, and then share it out. That way the residual media from the trim is left behind and is permanently removed from the clip. Do the same with the second clip. Then import both shared out clips into your initial project and add the cross-dissolve. With a 4-5 second cross dissolve you would need to trim back each clip a little to create new residual media for the transition to overlap. But at least what appears will not be unwanted footage.
