Ipod Touch Disabled - Can't enter passcode

My son's ipod touch is disabled (ie. he entered passcode incorrectly too many times). Is it possible to get it to restart to the screen allowing you to enter your passcode again ('cos he remembers it now of course!) WITHOUT losing data/photo's etc.? Very annoying if you can prove the device is yours but can't get access to it!? I really would like the photos etc. on it (no back-up to I-cloud was ever done - lesson learned!). Any suggestions before I erase it permanently would be much appreciated!

iPod, iOS 11

Just seems like a harsh punishment for temporarily forgetting your PIN - Would have thought Apple could do better than this?...

That's all well and good in theory, but if there was no maximum number of times to attempt the password, a modern computer could try all ten thousand combinations for a four-digit PIN in just a few seconds and be in like a shot.

If there was a work-around, or a back-door way in, it would have to be universal for every device and once known, anyone would be able to get into any device.
