Airplay settings reset after sleep

I recently updated my old 3rd gen Apple TV with a 4K model. In my setup, I have the apple tv hardwired into my network, and I airplay the audio from the apple tv to an airport express that my stereo is plugged into. On my old 3rd gen, the airplay setting was a "set it and forget it" type deal. I would set the audio to output to the airplay speakers in the audio settings, and every time I used the device, it would play the audio through the airplay speakers. Reasonable enough.

Now, whenever I wake the 4k from sleep, the airplay settings are reset to playing directly through the HDMI (which in my case is going to a projector on my ceiling with a tinny mono speaker.... not ideal). I am having to change the setting back to play audio through my airplay speakers every time I turn on the device. Its very annoying, especially considering my old device handled this so well.

I read on a forum that you can fix this problem by assigning the apple tv a static IP address on your router, and manually entering network settings on the Apple TV. I tried this, but it didn't fix the problem at all. Is there anything else I can try, or is this just another case of Apple's slipping standards when it comes to user experience?

I realize that I should have mentioned that I also use the same airplay speakers to play music from my phone. So it's not the Apple TV falling asleep that resets the airplay settings, it's the airplay connection from the apple tv to the airplay speakers being "interrupted" by a different connection.

With the old apple tv, unless another airplay connection was actively streaming audio to the airplay speakers at the time a video was played, the Apple TV would automatically re-establish its connection. I suppose this is just an aspect of the new implementation of airplay that doesn't work with my specific setup. Since I would never be listening to music at the same time as watching TV, I wish there was a way to allow the Apple TV to automatically supercede other "inactive" airplay connections.

Ok, yes I can confirm that. I'm not sure I ever did what you did all those years ago, so perhaps it's not something that was that obvious to me. I'm trying to remember though if I was able to aiplay to multiple devices back then from the Apple Tv. I know I could from the computer. Perhaps that's the trade off. I do get my money's worth out of being able to have Jimi Hendrix play from the computer, 6 Apple TV's and 2 HomePods all at the same time. The wife doesn't appreciate the feature quite as much as I do though
