Is the magic keyboard supposed to alway have the backlight on?

My magic keyboard backlight seems to stay on all the time. It stays on even when the case is closed and iPad is locked. Does anyone have any info on that? I may have neglected to read the manual in my excitement to try it out. Now I’m finding that my iPad battery is drained from the keyboard always staying on. Anyone else see this problem?
