Default number format in Mac OS

Enter 1 returns as .01, using decimal function can change displayed number to 0.1000, but not to integer 1. Changed in style same outcome. To display 1 must enter '1 or explicitly 1.0


Excel obviously talks to OS 10.15.5, passing it an integer and OS returns a real,, it would seem there is a matching error of data type. How is this repaired?
