Messages

I have recently got the iPhone SE and started using it before backing up my old phone now I noticed I am missing messaged from the last year. I have recently backed up my old phone but the messages have not shown up to my new phone. Am I going to have to reset the new phone that I have been using from a week to get messages and a couple pictures to show up?
