So I had the same problem on my 12" iPad Pro 2018 edition being stuck on battery with red line after allowing it to go depleted and after the latest software update.

Tried multiple time with original charger and cable and an original apple MacBook Pro USBC charger to no avail, until....

I read somewhere else that some people had success when they used a different brand usb-c cable.

To test this theory I grabbed the other original apple usb-c cable I knew worked because it was charging my MacBook Pro and connected it and the iPad would still not charge.

So I grabbed a generic usb-c cable I had for an android device, connected it to my MacBook Pro port and plugged it in and out a few times from the MacBook Pro and low and behold it booted up and started charging at 1%. I then used the same generic cable and connected it to the apple charger and it kept charging and within 10 minutes reached 7% and kept charging...

At 14% I tried to switch back to either usb-c apple cable I had and it would not charge...

Another bug Apple needs to fix for when the battery goes dead and system refuses to recognize/charge with original apple cable.

This is a software issue folks...

Yes definitely contact Apple .. my iPad Pro 12.9 3rd Gen recently did this .A week ago I took iPad to Apple .. they ran some tests

it wasn’t charging so was unable to turn on

they tried to charge ... no good and it wasn’t recognised by computer .. I was lucky as under Australian Consumer Law Coverage ( iPad isn’t quite 2 years old) they replaced with New iPad at no charge

couldn’t have been more kinder or nice

Same deal, light usage, less than 2 years old, then when not being used I let it go totally dead. The red low battery light blinks on, then turns off. I plugged it into a smart charger that displays charging current and what is happening is that the battery starts to draw current: .1 amp, .4 amp, .8 amp then when it hit 1.1 amps the red batter display turns on and the charge goes to 0.0 amps. a moment later is shuts down and the whole process repeats. Yes - the charges has much more that 1.1 amps of capacity.

Apple store took my service appointment, made me wait on line, then didn't even look at the unit, they simply said it had to be replaced.

Shameful.

I had a similar problem. VERY light usage of a iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Cellular since I bought it brand new from Apple for my wife in December 2018. No damage. No water. Just one day I noticed that no matter how long it was on the charger, it would only display a battery icon with a thin red line for a few seconds and then go black. I called Apple and after a bit of troubleshooting they scheduled me for a Genius Bar appointment the next day (yesterday at 5:20pm). I went there and, after looking at it for about 15 minutes, the technician said it was broken and could not be repaired... would have to be replaced... at a cost to me of $649 plus tax and whatever because it was "out of warranty" and I had not bought AppleCare with it.

It is completely unacceptable for APPLE to sell JUNK that STOPS WORKING just over a year and a half after buying it and then not replace it, I don't care WHAT warranty or AppleCare I bought with it. It should not just die like this!

This really changes my prior belief that Apple was a company that stood by its products. They don't. They suck and they break and you are left holding a $1,400 door stop. Wonderful job.
