iphone 6s plus is very slow; mail does not work

Hello there,

My iPhone 6s plus is about 3.5 y old (on iOS 13.5.1). It worked like a charm until 2 days ago (1-Jul). Am really not able to find any event (no recent updates) that could be the reason but, these are the symptoms I am experiencing:

Mail does not sync - it keeps saying "Checking for Mail". Post restart, I see new mail indicator but tapping on an email does not load the content - gets stuck at "Loading"
I cannot even delete the Exchange account as suggested on other support articles. It keeps stuck at "Deleting"
When I receive a call, there is no ring until about 10 seconds (I see the call on the screen).
Even after I pick up the call, the ring continues for about 5-8 seconds. After ending the call, there is a green border at the top indicating the call is still on.
Apps perform very very slow - nothing I saw since date of purchase.

I have been trying to restart, soft reset (press and hold wake+home) - nothing works.

Looking for any help to fix this. Appreciate any pointers!

This is all I tried and it seems to have worked:

Reset location and privacy settings
Delete mail accounts (was stuck at "Deleting" but the accounts were gone post restart)
Delete mail app (it did not really get deleted but the it showed the email provider list - more like a fresh install)
Freed up space by moving few old photos out

On the battery settings screen, there was also a message about performance management (unexpected shutdown due to battery issue etc.) along with a "disable" link. I clicked it to disable whatever was enabled during that shutdown.

- This is day 2 after my phone is literally "resurrected". It is actually running faster.
