APPLE SCAM

I had a call from this number ***-***-227. The message said that my icloud account was at risk and asked to press a number to talk to them. I thought it was scam though seemed very real so I hung up. Why I don't understand how could have they had registered a 800 number under Apple Inc as that is what appeared on my caller ID. Shouldn't Apple or big organisations do something and force the cable / phone companies not to accept false registrations?

You’re welcome. Unfortunately, the number is somewhat irrelevant, as the criminals making the calls are utilizing the numbers of legitimate businesses (in this case an they were faking an Apple number). So leaving the number displayed here would not serve as a warning for anyone.

Also note, that the number may have displayed as a US based number, but I would say there is a 99.999999% chance the call did not originate in the US.
