Do I have to put my document folder into iCloud if I want to put my desktop folder there? The checkbox approach treats them together.

Sorry, but I remain confused. What I want to do is to have my iMac desktop folder stored in iCloud to make its contents available on all of my devices, while keeping a local copy of everything on my local host itself. Not sure how this accomplishes that. Thanks.
Drag and drop untitled folder from Desktops over Documents in finder .
