When I try to manually add music to my ipod classic, it doesn't work (won't let me drag things into the ipod). Using the new itunes on OS Catalina. I had to wipe the hard drive and start fresh on this computer but don't want to lose everything on my ipod. Sorry for stubbornly clinging to 2009...

Syncing your device will remove existing content on it and replace it with content from your current library. See Recover media from an iPod - Apple Community, reclaim all of your media, then add back what you want to the device.
