does sound from my macbook when connected to a monitor and what do I need?

I need to hook up my sons MacBook air to an external monitor for school zoom meetings at home. If I use the Mini display to hdmi cable will the sound still come out of the speakers on the macbook? Should I use that cable or the vga adapter?

Can I still listen to music when it's plugged into Macbook (monitor has no built-in speakers) I've connected my Macbook Air to a Samsung monitor via an HDMI cable. The monitor doesn't have built-in speakers. I have a Marshall Bluetooth speaker that I usually connect sound output to from my Macbook. Is there a way to select and specify that Sound Output should be from Macbook to Bluetooth speaker, when the monitor is connected via HDMI? I basically want to save my eyes, and use a big screen, but still listen to music and be able to watch videos with sound on this big screen. I bought the monitor off FB marketplace, practically new, for a great deal...so I didn't know it didn't have internal speakers.

External Display and Audio from MacBook Air I wish to use an external monitor with my MacBook in close-display mode. Before I buy a monitor with built in speakers or a speaker set separately, can I use the external display to watch video or listen to music with the sound coming from the laptop even with the lid closed?

You can select which sound output the MacBook Air should use.

Or from the Sound option the System Preferences.
