I have recently converted old VHS tapes (family memories) to DVDs. I would like to now save these DVDs to my Mac book air (2017) and to a USB thumb drive. I have an LG DVD writer connected to my Mac air. I can see the LD DVD writer and play the DVDs but cannot save info to my Mac air.

Use Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility to create a new disk image from the DVD. With the disc in, open Disk Utility, select the disc in the sidebar, then make a New Image and save it to your internal drive.

Thank you very much! I was able to copy to my lap top to the movie application. But when I opened it, there is nothing there. The icon it created is a picture of a hard drive and the title I gave it it there. The file says it's a .dmg file.
Are there more steps I need to complete?

The .dmg file should then mount as a drive, which you can open and play. You may need to set your Finder preferences (Finder menu > Preferences > General and Sidebar tabs) to show CDs/DVDs on the desktop and/or sidebar.
I was able to adjust the Perferences to show the CD/DVDs on my lap top with the name I used for the DVD. However, when I clicked to open the DVD it gave me the name of the VHS tape converter to DVD that I used and it showed zero for content.
