That message appears only when you select a file created in, or last saved from a recent (ie. post '09) version of Numbers, Pages, or Keynote. Numbers '09 (and the other iWork '09 applications) used a file format that included an index.xml file.

Numbers 3 and the contemporary versions of Pages and Keynote) were complete rewrites, producing a different application from the '09 version, and using a different file format—one that neither requires nor includes an index.xml file.

Your easiest 'cure' is to select a .numbers file in Finder, press command-I to get Info, then in the Info window, go to the Open With section, choose Numbers 10.n (where .n matches the current new version you have installed), then click the Change all (or Apply to all) button to apply that instruction to all files ending with .numbers.

Repeat with .pages and .keynote files if needed.

Then quit Numbers '09, and launch it only when you want to open the original of a Numbers '09 file without converting it to the newer version.

Barry
