microphone not working

hi, my microphone on my iPhone has suddenly stopped working on all of my apps. it won't let me record a voice memo and when I take a video on my camera roll, you cannot hear anything. and when I go to play the video I took the volume button on the screen is grey and unable to go blue. My microphone settings are all on and enabled aswell so I don't know why it isn't working.
