External DVD player and Macbook

Hello!

I have Macbook with macOS Catalina and just bought an external DVD player to see some of my favourite movies. I connect the DVD player and then put in the disc and then my MacBook opens the DVD Player-app. After that nothing happens. I can see the black screen of DVD Player and all its functions on the left upper corner, there is also play, volume, stop etc. buttons in the middle of the DVD-player app but nothing happens when I push one of them (or press space etc). Has anyone faced the same problem, could there be a solution to this?

Thank you for the suggestion. I downloaded VLC player, but did not manage to open the disk with it. Once I opened the disk with VLC player, a warning popped up to the screen (see the picture). I followed the instructions on the screen, but still could not manage to proceed.

Thanks to both of you for your contribution earlier. I have now purchased a new DVD-player that should work with MAC. The same issue happens again. The DVD player opens, but nothing happens. Same with VLC-app. Starting to think whether there is something wrong with my laptop.

if it was me then I would test it with a friend or relative or the likes mac

i used by external asus blue ray burner with my mac and it seemed to work ok but never own a blue ray movie in my life

it was not really something I got around to testing

also if you use some non std. blue ray movie likes some 4K one then I would test with a vanilla one

Can you see the DVD disc in the Finder?

When you open the Volume, does it show a VIDEO_TS folder with .VOB/.IFO/.BUP files in it? If not, then the disc is not a proper DVD-Video disc.

Thank you for your reply. I can see it in the Finder and once I click it open, it has VOB, BUP and IFO files.

Thank you all for your contributions. It now turned out that the device does not support Apple (despite it having a chapter for Mac-use in an instruction book).

UPDATE: I tried with an Acer laptop and everything worked really well, so the problem seems to be my laptop. Hoping to have a solution to this one :s
