Although power is being supplied to my optical drive, my mac is failing to recognise it.
How do I get my iMac to recognise my optical device. Power is being supplied. Have used different ports, cables, etc.

Is the drive connected directly to the computer or is it connected to a US hub first? Most high-demand devices must connect to a computer port and not via any intervening adapters. hubs, keyboards, etc.
If the drive is older, it may need a cleaning to recognize disks. Drive-cleaning disks are relatively cheap and often restore full function to drives that won't mount disks.
The third CD worked! Thank you to everyone who commented.

Go to About This Mac under the Apple icon in menubar, then System Report then check Disc Burning under Hardware to see if Optical Drive is listed.
Go to Preferences in Finder and make sure CD's and DVD's are set to show on desktop.
What happens when you insert a disc?
Thanks for replying.
The disc accelerates for a couple of seconds and then stops. An icon does not appear on desktop.
Yes, thanks for your insight.
The DVD drive is listed under: Disc Burning
Thank you,
The box for CDs, DVDs, and iPods is checked
Thanks,
The optical drive is plugged directly into the computer. It is new. I have just tried two CDs, I think that I better try a third.
