Catalina 10.15.6 - Airplay not working after update

After updating to Catalina 10.15.6, AirPlay functionality stopped working on Samsung smart TV and couple other devices.

  • All devices are on same network
  • Everything is up to date
  • Airplay functionality does work from my iPhone (updated to latest iOS) , just not from "MacBook Pro"
  • Tried all debugging methods, MacBook reset nvram, pram, router, etc etc..

So after wasting all this time, problem is narroved to MacOS and recent update. Have anyone experienced same behavior ? Or maybe found a solution to this bugged release ?

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.15

After quite some time troubleshooting, my cause was CheckPoint VPN which rendered AirPlay and some other functionalities unusable. After uninstalling CheckPoint VPN (which i need to use for business) everything works as expected. Hope Apple will sort this with CheckPoint - https://www.checkpoint.com/products/remote-access-vpn/

Yes! I am experiencing issues as well with AirPlay after updating my laptop from an earlier version of Catalina (I believe 10.15.4) to 10.15.6 on my 2017 Macbook Air. I have another Macbook Air 2017 as well running 10.15.4, and AirPlay still works well.

I am unable to see any AppleTVs on the same wireless network as my 10.15.6 laptop. The only way I can view AirPlay devices on my computer is by turning on Bluetooth. If Bluetooth is not on, I cannot view any devices on my network.

I've even moved my ATV from wireless to wired internet connecting to my router, and my 10.15.6 laptop still cannot find it.

I think it has something to do with wireless drivers or kernel versions between the two laptops.

Here's the info off my 10.15.4 machine

Kernel version :Darwin Kernel Version 19.4.0: Wed Mar 4 22:28:40 PST 2020; root:xnu-6153.101.6~15/RELEASE_X86_64

I hope this gets resolved soon

I've opened up a support issue with Apple on this, and it's currently at engineering.

I've noticed that there are several issues - not just one, and much of this has not changed since migrating to 10.15.6

The problem seems to be exacerbated by using a mixture of Airplay and Airplay 2 devices on the network.

However, I'm not sure if this is the case.

The Error message "Could not connect to ”[Device Name]“ " cause Music playback to stop and stall across the network, which is really annoying. One can reset the music by playing a different playlist and then switching back. This doesn't solve the connection problem, just the playback problem.

The above error message is normally paired with another message: "The AirPlay device ”[Device Name]“ cannot be found on your network. Please verify your network settings and AirPlay configuration or select another device." This message times out after about 20 seconds, but it's very misleading (In most cases the network is absolutely fine (one can check with a phone or vendor app to see that the device is connecting fine on the network - and some of them have web pages which one can connect to).

When we see the error "There are no speakers connected to the AirPlay device “[Device Name]”, this actually means that the device is now working and we can playback through it.

Once all the above has taken place, your Remote App will not work any more until you have switched playlists and closed the relevant alerts - which sort of defeats the point of using a remote app.

Resetting the computer, or doing a dns flush does not help the issue. Likewise, making sure that you only have one network port (ie, not wifi AND wired) does not seem to make a difference.

The current workaround we are using - not always reliable - is to keep all the airplay devices on (once you have them all connected and playing) and then leave them all at zero volume rather than switching them on/off. In order for this to work, it's important to turn off power/network standby - and this workaround still is a major pita.

Same issue here...Im WFH and have been using my iPad Pro as a second display. Since updating to Catalina 10.15.6 I've been unable to connect to it and get "Unable to connect, device timed out" which really sucks as Im afraid Id need to either risk it and go into the office or pay for a software to be able to do so again.

I really hope this issue gets addressed fast.

Thank you Sahna! I was in the process of doing the hard reset this morning to start off my weekend. Luckily, I read this and you saved me the hassle. Still, though, this is very weird.

Update: I removed Norton's protection from Comcast on my computer, thinking the program was stopping AirPlay devices to populate on my computer. AirPlay devices are still not showing up.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, because of the issues I had with Checkpoint and so many cases of Windows computers not able to start after every major OS update, I almost completely switched to L2TP VPN, it is the only natively supported VPN Client by both Windows and Mac OS.

Regarding the connection drop outs, I have not experienced anything like this, I use L2TP to connect to remote locations daily, sometimes connections stay up for more than 24 hours before I disconnect. The hardware at the remote locations is Mikrotik, I can only recommend it. Building a hardware VPN solution based on the same brand is also very inexpensive and reliable!!
