Lost files and folders from desktop
Opened MacBook Air one morning and all of my files and folders had disappeared. I did something to al least have them pull from the cloud. Need to put back on hard drive/desktop.
MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.15

Yes, this is how I was able to get my files back, but everything is only being stored in the cloud. There are no actual files on my desktop. Also doesn't explain how everything just "disappeared" one day. Literally blank screen. It's difficult to get documents from cloud. Prefer that they live on desktop.
I'm having the same issue. Woke up this morning and no folders or files on my desktop. Suspect this has something to do with Catalina (which has a number of apps not working now) and I'm getting a little ticked off as this is really messing up my workday.
Selecting "store documents in I cloud" put them back on my desktop but these files were created on my computer and should not just disappear because something is wrong with I cloud i did not select store documents on I cloud for a reason!). Do I now need to make a backup of all items on my computer to disable I cloud? I really don't want to use this anymore if it is just going to hijack materials off of my desktop when I had not authorized Icloud to touch these files.
This is not helping at all. I need to access my files directly from my desktop not from the cloud. How do I keep copies of the items I use daily on my desktop?
