I have a 2009 iMac that I have finally replaced. I need to wipe the hard drive before receyling, however, it is stuck on the OS update screen “mac os can not be installed.” How can I bypass this screen? I’ve tried turning off/on. and pressing restart. I also need to properly eject a usb drive attached to the old iMac before recycling. Any advice would be appreciated.

I usually use either a disk image of the source storage device, if not the source storage device, as the source of the migration. Time Machine typically works just fine, it´s just rather slower.
But what happened here?
The migration failed this time because there was not enough storage space to keep both the previous migration and the new one. I obviously should have bought more storage. I got the 512GB SSD but I have almost 400 GB. I didn’t even think my 2008 iMac even had that much storage. Thanks for your help.
That worked. Thank you. One problem - I used the Migration Assistant and the last screen said it failed but I don’t notice anything missing. How can I be sure?
If the source device was wiped, there’s nothing to migrate from.
Not unless there’s a Time Machine or other external backup.
And if there were errors, we’ll need to know what those were.
The source device was a Time Machine. Unfortunately, I did not write down the error. I do remember it said Migration had partially failed.
I figured out there are some things missing. Could I do another migration? In addition to the TM I also have an external hard drive back up.
Certainly give it a try.
What can you get rid of?
OmniDiskSweeper shows you the files on your drive, largest to smallest, and lets you quickly Trash or open them.
