Touch ID

I have a macbook air from 2018. The problem is that whenever I want to add a fingerprint, the message 'Fingerprint limit reached. To add a new fingerprint, remove a fingerprint from any account on this Mac.' appears. I have not a single fingerprint added on this mac and there aren't any other accounts except for mine. What can I do? (I have done all the updates).

How to clear your MacBook Pro's fingerprint data

  1. Start up your Mac or Restart your Mac while holding down Command - R (⌘ + R).
  2. Release the keys when you see the Apple logo. Your Mac should now enter Recovery mode.
  3. Click Utilities in the Menu bar.
  4. Click Terminal.
  5. Type xartutil --erase-all in the Terminal.
  6. Press the Return key on your keyboard.
  7. Type yes.
  8. Click the Apple in the Menu bar.
  9. Click Restart to reboot your computer.

You should now be able to add fingerprints to Touch ID on your Mac.

"..On MacBook Air models introduced in 2018 and later, the

Touch ID button is on the right side of the function keys.."

Otherwise the Apple Support article [and others] are spot on.

Only issues noted for MacBook Pro and MacBook Air with Touch ID

(failure) was the matter of dirty scans; or a need to try again. These

are covered most all. ~ Where did the Chip come in? Didn't see it.

This should also work with MB/Air:

I have searched high and low for a resolution to my Touch ID no longer working (stopped working when Covid hit). I have searched, begged, read, and tried any and all tricks I possibly can too get it to work again. I have read that the "xartutil --erase-all" in Terminal wipes out the T2 Secure Enclave on the MacBook Pro 15" late 2018. I have also been told (by an Apple Support rep via chat) that the Touch ID only has "so many uses" before hit is rendered useless as all of the "slots" have been filled.

I don't know what to believe or do. I partitioned my drive and installed the developer beta hoping that THAT would fix it and no cigar. I know a ton of people who are STILL searching for a fix to this issue.

What are your thoughts on trying xartutil --erase-all?
