It would make basically no difference except Metal.
A like I said, go with the GTX680.
Even though it’s around $150-300 USD, It’s a great buy.
Any of us users online would be able to help you (support wise) with that card because many people use that card for the 3,1.

I've been running a GTX 770 in my cMP 3,1 for a while now and it's been great. Recently I stopped using the Nvidia drivers in favor of the ones built into OSX :)
Here's a screen shot from my system info, note the ROM version and the field below that:
From what I've read of others' experiences you'll see great improvements with any of the other compatible cards listed on that site linked above by Eau Rouge.
Good luck!
Are you trying to update to Catalina? You can’t, your hardware isn’t supported.
I wouldn’t see the point in upgrading to a metal GPU,
but if you want a metal GPU, Try Nvidia Kepler cards.
NVIDIA GTX 680
gtx7/8/9, and ATI 79xx, R7/R9 XXX
Still I wouldn’t see the point;
Youre stuck at El Capitan;
If you are probably interested in installing unsupported macOS .. you can’t do that, it isn’t allowed...
Try a Radeon 5870, it’s in my Mac Pro 1,1 and works fine...
Yep, I bought mine already flashed from Macvidcards. The GTX7/8/9 series apparently all use the same built-in OSX drivers for metal as the GTX680 so they should all work fine for you.
Wow... There are a ton of choices?! That's cool!
Keep trying is what I can do now... This superb machine still working fine, If I could do a little upgrade to make it run better, why not, right?
Btw,
"NVIDIA GTX 680

Any of them will work perfectly good on Mac Pro 3,1? And which one is the best & cheaper to go? I'm quite knowledgeless about GPU 😅
No I only posted that site as it is in the States and the largest amount of users here are probably from the states.
I am in the UK and bought mine from Apple Cards UK,
But they are out of almost every card.
Wow...Dell version seems not so popular in the OEM Market, but you seemed very understand about it!
Thanks for ensure that it's Metal Support (this is the reason for replacement), Cool!
It's 1GB Memory card?
Unfortunately, it's used unit! Btw, USD83+- worth to give it a shot?
Don't see why you can't give me a link, is this from a mac parts shop or just some punter wanting to
monetise some old stuff he has got. Does it say in the advert for it that it has Metal support, that
it has definitely been flashed for use in a mac, and do you know for definite that it works.
Thanks for concerning a out scamming seller 😄👍🏻
I should be safe! Card as you mentioned, pulled out from a PC that he repairing and Flashed for Mac (using software from Macvidcards). It's a well-known repair shop (especially Mac Repair).
In fact, I have no idea about the price, that's why your opinion is important to me! Still, mine is hd2600xt super old card, worth to spend few hundred dollars for the Old Card to replace my Super Old one? Haha.
But the point still Metal Support! Yes, just confirmed with seller, it's Metal Support!
Ok. Got it! As long as warranty provided, it's worth to try, right?! 👍🏻
My very concern is, this GT640 might give me a better performance, right? Hmm...is it popular for GT640 to drive on Mac Pro 3 1 so far?
That's cool! Yup I noticed that site! Does it mean you & guys bought from that website (flashed GPU) then plug & play instead?
Actually, I just wanted to upgrade the card to Metal Support to pass the requirement of some Apps!
Wow... so inspiring! Hmm... You bought from Macvidcards? Or flash by your own?
When you install the NVIDIA GTX 680, what do you do for the appropriate drivers?
You can do either, I’ve seen them down to $60 secondhand, and the rest you can do yourself.. 😃
