iCloud for Windows 10 - cannot change local photo location

I've just found a "solution", well at least a workaround to this problem. You simply need to change the location of your "Pictures" directory. And i mean your Windows "Pictures" directory, which is located on your C: drive.

Start with unchecking the iCloud-Photos checkbox in the iCloud application, this will remove all the iCloud Photos from your Windows PC, but NOT from your iCloud (read the warnings!)

Then go on with right-clicking the "Pictures" directory to open the properties. There you will find a location tab where you can set a new location for your "Pictures" directory. (for example your D: drive)

Once you've done that, you can re-enable/check the iCloud-Photos checkbox and there you go. The photos will now be stored on your D: drive.

Hope this helps anyone as much as it helped me.

I believe you need to download the icloud program from Apple directly, NOT use the one on the Microsoft store. The one on the store disables the option to put the photos elsewhere, I believe.

I agree with you that this used to work. I always changed the location on my PCs because I don't want big data folders cluttering up my C drive. I try to save that just for the OS and for applications. A big folder of photos can suck up a lot of disk space and slow the PC down.

I've read many support articles and none of them seem to address this issue.

I have the same issue here. I was wondering why my C drive filled up and realized that all my photos are on C drive now. This is so ridiculous and I'm going to uninstall iCloud client until this issue is solved.

This is a typical apple move. Removing something useful without caring about user needs.

After the Big Sur update I left my newly slowed down Macbook behind and went the PC route. While I expected the PC to be more of a challenge than the Mac, which I loved until the most recent update, I didn't expect to have Apple obstacles on the PC. I'm a diehard iPhone, iPad, AppleTV, iCloud Drive and Apple Music subscriber / user and I'm sure I'm not alone. It's disappointing to not be able to move the location of the pictures folder and still get the automatic syncing. The only work around I've found eliminates that option.

I've just changed PCs and installed icloud to back up my photos to my new computer and it will only install on the C drive -.- this is my SSD used for games. Really annoying as my old PC had it all backed up on my D drive which is for all my storage files. Why change this option??? It's ridiculous.

My 'Pictures' folder is already on my D drive and it's still downloading to C. Tried it twice and did it both times.

Anyway, I have now cancelled my iCloud sub and gone to OneDrive so they just lost a customer with this stupidity.

I am having a problem where I set the iphoto downloader to download to a network share. It pulls the new photos and puts them there, but not historical. I've tried telling it to download "All", and not just by year, but it doesn't do anything. Might try the store version, but so far I have not been successful in getting it to actually sync historic photos. This is with the downloaded version from the apple site.

The pictures directory for me is in the user folder. Using the suggestion I get "cannot create icloud photo directory". Switching back to the default (user) and everything works fine again. Any idea what's going on? I'd really like to get the photos on the D drive.

Same here, it appears to be clearly done on purpose.

The one on the Apple page is the older version and disables automatic sync. There's a couple other things different with it as well but I can't recall what.
