iCloud for Windows 10 - cannot change local photo location

I have just installed the latest iCloud for Windows from the Microsoft Store. I want to change the folder location for storage of downloaded photos, however the option doesn't seem to be present. Please see the screenshot - on another machine this previously this had options to change all the folders including photos downloaded from the main iCloud photos collection, as well as uploading folders. However it now only has an option to change Shared Albums location, which is no use to me as we don't use Shared Albums. The reason I would like to change this is to move the photos to an external drive connected to this machine. I don't have a lot of spare storage space on the main system drive so I would prefer to store them externally.

I am certain this used to work. Has something changed with iCloud for Windows?

Hey all,

I've just found a "solution", well at least a workaround to this problem. You simply need to change the location of your "Pictures" directory. And i mean your Windows "Pictures" directory, which is located on your C: drive.

Start with unchecking the iCloud-Photos checkbox in the iCloud application, this will remove all the iCloud Photos from your Windows PC, but NOT from your iCloud (read the warnings!)

Then go on with right-clicking the "Pictures" directory to open the properties. There you will find a location tab where you can set a new location for your "Pictures" directory. (for example your D: drive)

Once you've done that, you can re-enable/check the iCloud-Photos checkbox and there you go. The photos will now be stored on your D: drive.

Hope this helps anyone as much as it helped me.

Did you redirect the correct Pictures folder? You need to redirect \OneDrive\Pictures, not C:\username\Pictures. Remember, there is two Picture folders but with the last few Windows 10 builds, the Pictures in OneDrive is the default pictures folder, so that is the one you must redirect.

Widoya's suggestion should work. The mklink command (for junction points) is essentially the same thing and that has appeared as a solution before : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8163814
