Paypal refuses to allow balance as method of payment to itunes

I have tried everything to buy an app on itunes and pay for it with my paypal balance?

everytime I try(have to go through all the security details etc) once I have chosen paypal as my preferred method it takes me to my paypal log in then once logged in , paypal ask for my credit/debit card details? There are no other options. I have tried contacting paypal but with the excuse of covid19 they will not answer but rather sent me on an automated maze that hasnt got the right option , the voice recognition software they use is useless understands everything other than what you are saying to it? Then finally they cut you off?

unbelievably frustrating. I would love to ditch paypal but are there any credible alternatives? I would be very grateful if anyone that’s had this experience and succeeded in changing their method of payment for itunes to their paypal balance could reply to this and enlighten me? Even knowing that other people have had this experience will help my sanity.
