Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

All my books in iBook disappeared.

I had downloaded about a dozen books from the free iBooks catalog but today they are all gone. That includes the Winnie the Pooh and iPad user guide.
Does anyone know why/what/how this happened.

I hesitate to use iBooks now until I find out if they are going to disappear on a regular basis.

Thanks for any info anyone has.

I had this same problem happen to me yesterday while I was actually in the iBook app on my iPhone 4 reading things, and this is what I did to get everything back to normal in about a minute-

*During all this, all of my eBooks, both PDF and EPUB from the iBooks store, even EPUBs I added myself, remained in the Books section of iTunes on my computer throughout all syncing. If your books somehow got lost or deleted from your computer as well as your mobile device, then this probably wouldn't be of help to you*

Sync the device to iTunes
Uncheck iBooks in the Apps section
Sync again to uninstall iBooks, hitting OK if you get a message about not being able to read eBooks without iBooks
Recheck the iBooks App
Sync again to reinstall iBooks
Open iBooks to see if this worked for you as it did for me

I got everything back exactly how it was before the problem started, EPUBs and PDFs, bookmarks and the pages I left off at.

Tried your solution ... didn't work. I had downloaded one free iBook and was periodically reading it on the iPhone (new one). Always opened to the last page I was on. Yesterday the page appeared, then disappeared. Book not listed in the bookshelf ... totally empty. Tried resyncing ... still showed within iTunes - iPhone books tab. No luck ... same with your uninstall/reinstall idea.

Other than trying to redownload ... don't have any other ideas. Is this a common problem with iBooks for the iPhone? If so ... anyone recommend another app?

Thanks for any assistance.

I am having the same issue. Every time I sync with iTunes, I get every book. Then I launch iBooks, the "Edit" button becomes the wait symbol for a few seconds, and I suddenly have way less books than I am supposed to.

Lately, the issue has receded somewhat on the iPad, though it is happening each and every time I read anything on my iPhone 4. Any ideas on how to get rid of it?

Turned out that our problem was caused by a corrupted download of the new iBooks software. Each time we deleted it and resynced, the corrupted version was put on again. The cure was to delete it and re-download it.

But what we were experiencing went beyond just losing the books, also the app was continually telling us to download it again (to no avail) and would not function at all, for buying or reading books.

Let me be added to the list of people with disappearing books. I was reading the same book on the iPad and the iPhone (with wireless bookmark syncing switched on). The book on the phone disappeared today inexplicably (even though I did not sync the phone) Oddly enough, Winnie the Pooh survived, and some pdfs I had.

Bug in ibooks? No doubt!

I think I figured it out.

Connect your iPhone to the computer. When it is recognised by iTunes and after it has synced select your phone from the Device menu on the left. Then, go to the bar at the top where 'Summary' is selected by default and select 'Books' to explore the books on your iPhone.

Ensure that the 'Sync Books' box is selected as well as the 'All books' option. Press 'Apply' and then press 'Sync' to re-sync. The PDF menu should reappear on iBooks if you have any pdfs downloaded and hopefully the books will be there.

The last major update i did resulted in the same issue. When I went to iBooks, all my downloaded books and pdf files had disappeared. A simple fix that worked for me is to go to your iphone tab(on the side bar) once you are connected then look for your book tab(9th tab over). Under this tab it will allow you to sync your books individually or as a whole. Choose to sync your books and next time you sync your iphone to itunes, you should see all your books/pdf in iBooks. For some reason, during major updates or changes to your iphone, this (sync book) tab tends to get unchecked. Hope this helps!!

*A warning must be sounded about the advice given here*. Thanks to Apple's incredibly annoying setup, clicking on the Books tab means you potentially lose all your movies, TV films and songs from your iPhone (unless you have an exact replica of all of this stored on iTunes). I have my iPhone set up in iTunes (Devices, Summary) to Manually Manage Music and Videos, but that gets quickly overridden when one clicks on the Books tab to sync them as recommended by some people here. *Do not do this if you want to synch music videos manually and don't have everything that is stored on your iPhone also on iTunes as well!* Instead, drag the books from theBooks sidebar in iTunes (on the left) into the Devices iPhone Books sidebar located underneath. This ensures that only books get synced and everything else stays intact. My own, slightly different, problem is that all the iBooks have disappeared from the bookshelves on the iPhone app but are shown on my laptop and are listed accurately when I open my iPhone in iTunes (so they are clearly there on the iPhone) but they don't show up on the bookshelves in the actual app on my iPhone.

All my books in iBook disappeared.
