All my books in iBook disappeared.

I had downloaded about a dozen books from the free iBooks catalog but today they are all gone. That includes the Winnie the Pooh and iPad user guide.
Does anyone know why/what/how this happened.

I hesitate to use iBooks now until I find out if they are going to disappear on a regular basis.

Thanks for any info anyone has.

I try not to sync my iPad. Its just lame to have a "wireless" device tethered with a cable to a computer. So, to all you who say your books disappear after syncing I say, you have not discovered the cause of the problem I'm having.

I am constantly bringing over PDFs via email, and books via the online store. They disappear at random. I'm thinking they're timed. Maybe if you haven't opened them in a while they just go away.

Apple, please add me to the list of frustrated users of iBooks who are eagerly anticipating a fix.

These are user-to-user forums and are not monitored by Apple, so don't expect any response from them. If your iBooks have disappeared out of the app, then you could try one or more of the following :

closing the iBooks app completely and then re-opening it to see if it is just a blip : from the home screen (i.e. not with iBooks 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the iBooks app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.

a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

Out of frustration I came here to share my problems and hopefully find a solution. On 13/11/2011 I got a new iPad 2 and on the same day upgraded the firmware to the latest. My windows 7 pc has my iTunes library from my iPhone 4 and a previous iPad 2.

I never had any issue with iBook until recently. All my books just varnished without warning from my iBooks bookshelves but they are still visible on the iTunes Books tab on my pc. Another worrying issue is the apparent instability of the iBooks App. You would download it from the App store but it does not show on the home screen. You purchase or download a free book the iBook store the same does not appear on the iBook App's Library.

I would appreciate it if any one has useful insight on what is happening to iBooks App, the books and iTunes. And more importantly, how this can be fixed.

Cheers

I have 4s, was reading a book in iBooks, went camping where there was no cell reception, and could not access my "downloaded" book, although I could access books in my Kindle app. When I came home, my books were still not in iBooks, although they showed up on my computer. Went to the bookstore and I had the option to download the book again, but I kept getting the message on my phone that my device was associated w/another Apple ID. I turned off my phone (all the way), synced, etc, and nothing worked until I found your advice above. My Apple ID was correct when I checked in settings, so I don't know what was up, but your solution of deleting the app and re-installing it worked for me. THANKS so much!!!! I was so bummed to not be able to read my book while camping, then even more bummed when it was gone when I got home and was all ready to get back into it! Your advice has made my day! 🙂

I opened iBooks on my iPod and found that almost all my books had disappeared also.

Then I did the following:

1. connected the iPod to my MacBook with the USB cable

2. opened iTunes

3. selected the iPod in iTunes

4. selected the Books tab in the iPod iTunes device window

That's when I found that the iTunes preference Books/Sync Books had changed itself from "All books" to "Selected books". I changed it back to "All books", clicked apply and waited for the sync to finish.

When reopened iBooks on the iPod, I found that only some of the books had been restored. So I went back as before to check the iTunes Books/Sync Books setting and found that, once again, the setting had changed by itself from syncing "All books" to "Selected books" only. Once again, I manually selected sync "All books", synced again manually (don't know if I clicked "Apply" this time or just clicked "Sync", and this time it finally restored all the books to my iPod.

Manually restoring the iTunes preference to sync books to "All books" and resyncing eventually did solve my problem… though it leaves me very uncomfortable with the reliability of the system.

Hope this helps those with iDevices that had the same problem with iBooks Books vanishing.

It's two years later and it seems Apple has still not fixed this issue. It's now 2 years later, and the issue is still here lvl 9's. There is no rhyme or reason to it. After using iBooks faithfully for years now, turning from the cheaper and better stocked Kindle store I am having major issues with it. Since my iPhone 5 battery dies so quickly, I bought a 5th gen iPod just for one app, iBooks. Well four days after this new purchase and it working out really well, I was reading one of my books when I decided to go to the iBooks store to check for a sequel. After that I went to my purchased shelf and then back to "my favorite books" shelf to my novel. To my shock only my purchased books remained but my long standing books, including the one I was reading, were all gone. The first obvious thought was that I was still somehow in the purchased shelf but I wasn't, I was in my "my favorite books" shelf. I went through all my shelves and every book I had not purchased through iBooks, all my PDFs and older free epubs were gone. I checked my iPhone 5 and they were still on there, did a soft reset to my iPod, restarted it, etc. basic troubleshooting but no books came back. I knew I could restore from backup via iCloud but I was without wifi. When I was finally able to connect to a wifi hotspot I was able to erase the entire iPod and restore from backup which took all night leaving me bookless when I needed them the most. 24hrs later all is restored but how do I know this isn't going to randomly happen again some night when I really need a book? I'm very disappointed and would love to know why iBooks is so buggy after two years!

Having spent countless hours downloading PDF scientific papers during the last year and organised then in ibooks, i finally felt the need for a backup of the ibook library. Using Itunes on the win 8, 64 bit computer the sync process was seemingly succcessful.

Having a presentation today, I needed some of these documents for diskussions. EVERY SINGLE PDF-PAPER WAS DELETED instead of backed up during the last sync. NO WARNING, NO NOTHING, just sync completed OK.

I do not dare to use itunes any more. Are there alternative ways of backing up ibooks ? Fortunately there was an icloud backup of the ipad and I´ll hope that a restore from that will minimise the damage. However the presentation was ruined. Itunes is simply the worst Apple product ever in this respect, no control, not reliable, numerous user interface issues with my three I-devices. Maybe Kindle does the work right ? Apart from that i am an IThing fan.
