Must I have two-step verification to access iCloud acct when using my iPhone and Apple password?

If 2SV is already enabled, it can’t be disabled. You can see here for more information: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204915#FAQ
Also, if you are offline and need a code, go to Settings > [Your Name] > Password & Security > Get Verification Code.
A new alert will pop up on your device every time you log in. You don’t need to remember it.
