backupbundle no longer available in time machine after moving location

I backup my laptop (Catalina) to my iMac (Catalina) over my home network. That has worked so far. Now that I am out of space on my iMac I copied to backupbundle to an external hard drive connected to my iMac. External HDD is accessible from my laptop and backups are added to the copied backupbundle in the new location. But, going into time machine on my laptop, I can only see the backups that have been created since the move of the file; none of the previous backups. And obviously, I can't access the backupbundle file itself either. Any ideas how to solve that?

Well you should start by following Apple's advice in https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201250, specifically where Apple says:

Connect an external storage device

Connect one of the following external storage devices, sold separately. Learn more about backup disks that you can use with Time Machine.

  • External drive connected to your Mac, such as a USB, Thunderbolt, or FireWire drive
  • External drive connected to an AirPort Extreme Base Station (802.11ac model) or AirPort Time Capsule
  • AirPort Time Capsule
  • Mac shared as a Time Machine backup destination
  • Network-attached storage (NAS) device that supports Time Machine over SMB

Your iMac is not a backup device for your laptop!
