In Photos, on my Mac (2.6 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5, running Catalina 10.15.6,) my shared albums folder disappeared. It still exists on my phone and ipad, but not in Photos on the Mac or in Icloud photos. Under Shared on the Mac is only a cloud icon with"Activity".
I have multiple duplicate photos libraries on the Mac from efforts to solve another problem (very slow response, now marginally improved).
How can I retrieve my shared albums?

Have you checked your iCloud settings in Photos? Go to preferences in Photos and click on the iCloud tab. Make sure the Shared Albums checkbox is checked.
Have you already tried to disable the Shared albums in the Photos Preferences > iCloud,
then to restart the Mac and enable Photos Preferences > iCloud > Shared Albums again? It may take a while, until the shared albums will come back.
Solved! Actually I switched to a different library, made it the system library, then switched back and made the original the system library, and THEN I was able to turn on shared albums. Thanks for putting me on the right path.
