Apple Watch needing to be re-paired with Powerbeats

I've had a pair of Powerbeats 4 since May, which were originally working well. They would easily switch connection between my iPhone, Watch and MacBook Pro without any issue. However, since updating to watchOS 6.2.8 a couple of weeks ago, I've been unable to get my Apple Watch to connect to the Powerbeats without putting them into pairing mode. The Watch seems to 'see' them; they appear under Bluetooth devices, but will not connect unless I re-pair them. The Powerbeats still connect to my iPhone and MacBook Pro without fail. I've also tried resetting the Powerbeats and reconnecting them with my iCloud account, but the problem persists.

Hello kodamapixel1,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We're glad you're here!

We understand from your post that you've been unable to keep your Powerbeats connected to your Apple Watch since updating to watchOS 6.2.8. You've done some great steps so far, and we'll be happy to assist you further.

To that end please tell us:

  1. Have you follow the steps found in this link "Set up and use your Powerbeats Pro with an iPhone, Mac, or other device" under the caption "Switch from one device to another?
  2. When this has occurred were you using another Apple device other than your Apple Watch just before the connection was lost?
  3. What happens when you tap Powerbeats while in the Music app on the Apple Watch?
  4. If you see an error message, please share the details.

All the best!

Thanks for your reply, raina_b22.

I've followed the steps in the link you've provided, but still can't connect without putting the Powerbeats into pairing mode. My Apple Watch does show the Powerbeats under bluetooth devices, but when selecting, I see the spinning 'thinking' icon next to the name and can't make a connection. Putting the Powerbeats into pairing mode fixes this though: they connect right away.

Each time I try to connect my Apple Watch, my Powerbeats aren't connected to another device. Usually the Apple Watch was the last device they were connected to.

When I use Apple Music on the Apple Watch and try to select Powerbeats, I get this message: "Connection Failed. Make sure "Powerbeats" is turned on and in range." The Powerbeats are on (not in pairing mode) and around 30cm from my Apple Watch.
