Mouse cursor misaligned on rotated and scaled external display

I have a 4k external display that I use rotated to a vertical position and I'm running into a really weird issue, was wondering if anyone has seen it too.

To reproduce this issue we need the following settings:

  • Rotation set to 90 or 270 degrees
  • Monitor set to any scaling other than "More Space" (e.g. looks like 1692x3008)

What I see is the following:

  • With 90 degree rotation
    • As the mouse moves right on the screen, at some point it disappears and from then on the cursor becomes misaligned with the pointer.
  • With 270 degrees
    • The same situation happens but at the bottom of the screen.

Another way to clearly see the effect happen is to draw a selection box and see the cursor jump from the corner to a few dozen pixels to the left.

I'm not sure what to do (other than not scale or not rotate my display). Any hints?

I also have this problem using an external LG 27" 4K display with similar settings as OP. Tried disabling all login items, reset PRAM, reset SMC. Nothing works. In my case, as I move the cursor over a threshold, it disappears. As I continue moving the cursor in the same direction, it reappears in the same position it disappeared, but now the cursor is drawn offset from the actual cursor position. This offset seems constant regardless of screen scale.

Furthermore, if I use QuickTime to record the screen, the cursor is recorded at the correct spot even though that's not what I was seeing while recording. Furthermore, when screen sharing on Google Meet, other participants see my cursor at the correct spot, not the spot I'm seeing it appear.

This also happens at 180 degrees.

This does not happen if the screen is not scaled, or if it's scaled at the extreme end of "More Space" (the 5th icon in the Scaled selector). Only the middle three settings cause this problem.

Running Mac OS 10.15.6
