macbook pro screen not turning on

My macbook screen is intermittently not turning on. Currently it is working perfectly, but if I leave it on sleep or close it for any period of time it will not restart after. The machine is still on when the screen is blank. It will play the charging sound and give error sounds when I press some of the keys while the screen is off.

Has anyone had this issue? and what was the resolution?
