Using HomePod without Apple Music

I have a large library of music in iTunes, most of which was purchased on the iTunes store. I do not have Apple Music. I want to set up a HomePod in my basement and be able listen to my playlists without a lot of hassle. I don't want to have to go upstairs to a device in order to connect. Can I "Hey Siri" my playlist without doing anything else? If I can't do that, it seems that HomePod may not be the solution for me.

Yes. Thank you for taking the time to suggest that. I have a setup in my garage using an old iPhone and a bluetooth speaker, but was hoping to use the better sound of a HomePod for my basement. I like having my music on my devices and while Apple Music is a great service, I already have thousands of songs that I paid for and hate to rent them again.

Thanks again.

An iOS device seems to be the best option. You can use the iOS Remote app to play music via your Mac (ie the Mac's music library) to the Homepod. You can even select the Homepod as audio output for the Mac from within the Remote app.

Once connected in this way you can use Siri Homepod to stop/start/skip songs and change volume but you will need to use the Remote app on an iPhone/iPad to change albums or playlists.
