how do I connect 2 4khd external monitors to mac air, non-mirror, for independant screen use. have 2 monitors set up using single mini display splitter. however, both mirror monitors mirror each other and what i need is 2 independently displaying monitors with my MacBook Air as controlling screen.

What model (year) of MacBook Air do you have? Does it have Thunderbolt 3 ports? You mention āUSB and miniā and if your Mac has regular USB (aka USB-A) ports it cannot support two separate external displays no matter what sort of setup you run. Only Macs from 2018 or later support two external displays.

I do not believe you can use a "splitter". You need to "daisy-chain" the two displays with each other and the Mac.
Simply put it means a USB cable goes to the first monitor, which in turn connects to the second monitor. Not a "splitter".
I don't think so. What you need are Thunderbolt compatible monitors. Besides, as neuroanatomist wrote, your Mac needs to be a more recent model to support more than one.
thanks for responding. i have since come to same conclusion. can you flesh out "daisy-chain" a bit more please? not a tech savvy dude. what type of adapter(s) do you suggest? Can I connect through the usb port instead of the mini port for the 4k hdmi?
I'll try that. last question, pardon my ignorance, but does the same set up work using hdmi cables running from monitor to monitor. lastly, will this give me separately operating (don't know tech term) screens so that I don't wind up, as now, with 3 screens all showing same mirrored image?
