contacts on MacBook air won't let me add a new card

I am on a MacBook Air, running Catalina. When I try to add a new contact card to my contacts, I get through typing the name but as soon as I go to fill in details, the app just suddenly switches to an existing contact. Tried quitting and restarting and saving from just the name but nothing works. Won't let me save the new card either. I know other people were having this problem with High Sierra back in 2018 but is it still happening and what can I do?
