Recently, I wanted to look at movies to rent or buy from Apple (like I always have done in iTunes), but now Apple TV ONLY has a selection for "Up Next" that requires a subscription to Apple TV? I have no interest in that; just want to watch a movie as in the past.
Did Apple change this? Are we no longer permitted to buy or rent movies from Apple?

Thanks! I am on the phone with Apple Support and they did not have any idea what "Up Next" is and they were unfamiliar with issue (loss of "Buy" or "Rent" option). Just as confused as I am. It was being escalated to another team.... waiting right now.
Actually, I see what you mean. When I first looked, everything was right. Now, the banner that says Fantasy Island is a 99 cent rental is gone as are the "Buy" and "Rent" buttons.
Someone else reported the problem:
The only time I see "Up Next" at the bottom of the window is if I've selected "Watch Now". If I select "Movies" or "TV Shows", I see what's available to buy or rent.
Take a look at Preferences>Restrictions. Is "Purchasing or Subscribing" ticked? If so, untick it.
I can see rent or buy on mine in movies but where do you search by genre? It’s not very user friendly.I don’t use my Mac for this I look on my iPad in iTunes. Or right off my ATV Box in the Movies App. If you rent or buy on one device you can watch it on another. Might be easier to look on your phone in iTunes app instead. I find this to be a lot of scrolling, I just want to see a big page full of movies by genre Or New Releases.

I was going to just restart but, since I had an update waiting to be installed, I did that first. Everything is back to normal.

In TV on the Mac, there were not buttons for "Buy" or "Rent" for anything. Yes, one could buy or rent it on another device (I don't every watch on my Mac) but, it was still weird.
You can find genres all the way at the bottom of the Movies page.
What device are you using? If your using the TV app on your Mac, you need to click the button at the top that says "Movies" or "TV Shows".
I did that, but can no longer see an option to buy or rent a selected movie- only selection is "Up Next" and that is for Apple TV subscribers only.

It is rather sneakily hidden beneath all the "services" and everything else that might entice you to buy even more.
