iPhone 11 Pro having Bluetooth audio issues

I have recently started to see an issue on my iPhone 11 Pro where I connect a Bluetooth audio device (speaker, headphones, even happens with my car) and the phone shows that the device is connected in the Bluetooth settings, however audio continues to play through the iPhone (not the Bluetooth device). The weird thing is, the play/pause and skip buttons on the Bluetooth device still control the audio playing on the iPhone. When audio is playing, if I click the airplay/Bluetooth button from the control center (top right of the control center in music playback box) it does not show that the Bluetooth device is connected. However, in the iPhone settings menu, if I go to Bluetooth, it shows that the device is connected.

This is an intermittent issue that happens about 25% of the time with all of my Bluetooth devices, and it only started happening within the past couple months. Usually I can only fix it if I “Forget this device” from the Bluetooth settings menu and reconnect.

Hi jawg7,

We see your audio is not playing through your Bluetooth devices as expected. We have some great information to get that going. When a Bluetooth device is paired it can still be unselected to not play. This article will help confirm that setting.

Access and customize Control Center on your iPhone and iPod touch

This section specifically will help to switch the audio output.

"Touch and hold the audio card in the upper-right corner of Control Center to quickly play, pause, and control the volume of your favorite song, podcast, and more.

Tap the AirPlay icon  to switch the audio output to speakers, headphones, Apple TV, or another audio device. You can also choose to play the same music across multiple speakers you have set up in your home.

You might also see cards for nearby devices that you can control audio playback for. Just tap a card to control audio for that device. You can also use the cards to create a shared music queue with friends."

Have a great weekend!

Hi jawg7,

It would be expected for something connected in the Bluetooth settings to not always automatically switch in the AirPlay menu. When it shows connected in Settings > Bluetooth, that lets us know the device is connected and ready to use. When accessing Control Center > AirPlay you can switch between multiple Bluetooth devices to use for AirPlay.

If the output is not working as expected please contact Apple here, Get Support.

Have a great week!

As I mentioned in my original post, when I click the AirPlay icon from the Control Center, it does not show that the audio device is connected. However, in the iPhone settings menu, if I go to Bluetooth, it shows that the device is connected. I think this is a bug as it only recently started happening. I've submitted a bug report to Apple.
