iPad won't connect to monitor

We bought a basic Acer monitor for our son to use with his iPad (5th gen) for schoolwork. We followed the directions on the Apple support website below with a VGA cable and lightning-to-VGA adapter, but the monitor still just says "No Signal" when we connect the iPad. Are we doing something wrong or missing something obvious?

I’m unsure of your expectations - but consider the following...

iPad has Screen Mirroring - that reproduces what you can see on the iPad display - on an external TV or monitor. Screen Mirroring does exactly as its name implies; the iPad screen is reproduced on the external display, preserving the aspect ratio of the iPad screen.

AirPlay extends capabilities of iPad - permitting display of playing media content (either download or streamed) to an external TV or monitor, at full resolution and aspect ratio of the source material, independently of the iPad screen. This capability, however, does not extend to video conferencing Apps such as Zoom.

With these observations in mind, perhaps this support page will be helpful with troubleshooting the problem:

Yes, thank you, screen mirroring is what we were hoping to do so he can see his schoolwork on a larger screen. We followed all of the directions on the support page originally posted as well as on the page in your response re: adapters, and still nothing is appearing on the monitor. Not sure if we are somehow missing something or if there is a problem with the monitor.
